No ins and outs??!!?

So, here i am at Zeitgeist Friday evening finally in after waiting in line for 30 minutes! At about 9 pm i wanted to go across the street to get cigarettes- i tell the bouncer that i will be back in 5 minutes and he is like: no, you can;t get back in! WTF??!!
I asked him why he wouldn't let me back in and he couldn't even give me a real answer.. i told him to fuck himself and got kicked out!

I've been coming to this joint for years now and am always a good patron to have- i used to be friends with the bouncers (Cale, where are you ? -i miss you!!) because they were cool and nice and not such big heads like the one i had to deal with, a blown up clown with no manners and an attitude that screams of stupidity and lacks any class.
sorry Zeitgeist you have people like this guy representing you.. i feel for you!

It really depends upon the door person, but a lot of them have done this for years. Especially when it's busy. A lot of folks always want to run across the street to get smokes, or food, and then come back in. Well when it's not busy, that's not such a problem. When it is, it's up to the discretion of the door person. And just like with a bartender, it's counter to your best interests to question it or argue.

Consider how many dozens of other folks have already asked for that same favor, probably multiple times "I forgot something." And then there's those that use it as a way to get other folks into the bar so they don't have to stand it line. "Oh, I told you we were just going to the store." I've seen some serious scuffles over this from folks still trying to get in. It's the old no-cutzies game, with shivering drunk people. All headaches the poorly paid door staff don't need and are pretty weary of dealing with. It may just look like they sit at the door, but they bear the brunt of a lot of tired old bullshit. So naturally they can be standoffish.

It's unfortunate that you had that experience but hopefully now you can better understand why.

      no, i don't understand...

i was already in for hours, why shouldn't i get back in afterwards. I was even so polite to tell him, look my friends are all in, i just wanna get smokes?? Are you kidding me? No ins and outs in a bar? If the bouncer has such a short term memory, that he doesn't remember me after 5 min ( even if he only remembers my german accent) then he shouldn't be working the door and/or representing an etablissement that lives of people consuming liquor and smokes.
I'[ve been numerous times to ZG when it was packed, and i NEVER had a problem getting back in after i told the bouncer i am just off to get cigarettes.
Guess my bouncer was one of the dudes that can't deal with any given authority whatsoever, without getting a big head over it and abuse his given discretion. Where i come from we call them peeps <<Loosers>>

also, it's their job dealing with stuff like that man!
If i tell my boss tomorrow i dunno wanna deal with all this legal shit that comes with my work- he's gonna show me the door. Get another job then! IT's that easy..

The door guy didn't tell his boss, he told you, a customer. So not quite the same thing. But for some real experience I'd say try working at a bar as a door person or bouncer to give you a better understanding of the dynamics.

Of course, I'm not at all discounting the fact that the person you encountered was being a jerk. And that would suck. Even so it's still the same result. They are in charge. How they choose to handle it is pretty much the law of the land. If you doubt, next time it happens ask for the bar manager and see what they have to say about it. Providing that they say anything at all, 10:1 odds say the manager says something along the lines of "If that's what he told you then that's the way it is."

Simply speaking ... because the door person said so. Thems how things work.

Being a doorperson at a bar or club has got to be one of the worst jobs ever. In terms of dealing with drunken idiots and sketchy losers, perhaps cops have it worse, but at least they get to carry guns and can always slap the cuffs on if somebody gets uppity.

That said, much as I like the 'geist, some of the staff there can cop way too much of a 'tude for no good reason.

But why you'd want to wait in line all evening just to buy beers and sit at a picnic table is beyond me.

Perhaps they should start selling cigarettes at the bar. Since there's food already, there would really be no excuse to leave.

Tamale Lady, are you listening? Maybe you need to expand your product line so Zeitgeist patrons don't have to go out until closing time.

Ahh, but there *can* be fun had working the door at a bar!

A long time ago I worked at a bar in NYC, frequented mainly by college students. I managed the kitchen, but occasionally was called to work the door for a bit when necessary. It's a thankless job, and boring as hell - so I decided to start carding the drunk idiots as they *left* the bar, just to amuse myself. I got a lot of surprised looks through bleary eyes, but about 50% of them actually handed me their ID, and the rest thought it was a good gag.

A doorman never needs to be an asshole, just needs to do the job - but sometimes, they think that involves being a prick. When people rub you wrong, it's easy to get into that mode.

And yeah - almost 20 years ago I was a doorman at Zeitgeist for a few months, and since I was young and the new guy who didn't know the regulars, I got a shitload of attitude from some of the people who came there frequently, just because I asked for their ID.

The people who work the door do what they need to do, and their attitude towards you is usually a direct reflection of how you treat them. If a customer is an asshole, then it's commonly a judgment call - why would we want them in our bar anyway?

I have been a bar person myself.and was a waitress for several years so i know exactly what this job entails.
I asked the guy nicely and polite (that's just the way i am) that i swing over to the corner store and that i' ll be back... period.
I tell you what, i was unlucky enough to encounter the species: I have a small dick and thus i am being one! Totally.

Anyhow, if any of you guys see a bouncer with greyish hair, a small dick and no balls- say hi from me ;)

being an asshole is a choice.
I worked the door at a bar for a while.
                I got assholes.
                I wasnt an asshole back.
In fact, the assholeier they got, the nicer I got.
It's amazing how little progress they make when they
                have nothing to fight against.

Personally i find that being in a position of power doesnt give you any kind of permission to be an asshole back.
That role actually means you need to utilize your powers of persuasion to get the results you want.

Seems if cops and the such took this approach, there would be a lot less dicktacuffs.

If the guy treated you poorly, just don't ever go there again! Show them! (Place is too crowded now anyway.)

speaking of questionable behavior of Z door people, the politics of bar crowds, hipper-than-thou-ism,etc, anyone see today's Chron article about 'a bar that won't be named'?

Ummmmmm, why don't their door people use a simple rubber stamp with ink to better identify people who've been in-n-out... problem solved.

                      BTW --
Aside from being a musician/DJ in clubs/bars for 20 years in NYC, I've also bounced for about 5 or more years.
Y'know what -- If a bouncer can't remember someone's face/identity after they've already been admitted to the venue, then he/she should be a bar back instead.
