Esquire’s just published The Best Bars in America, and Zeitgeist scored pretty big. They call it the best bar in San Francisco, and it ranks high as any other bar in the state.

"...But there’s something at Zeitgeist that goes beyond the great food and the great beer garden. The bar seems angry. The symbols are angry. The bumper stickers are angry. But Zeitgeist is not an angry place. In fact, it is unmistakably friendly and open, even happy. At Zeitgeist, nobody’s a freak, not even the guy in the khakis and polo shirt..."
I asked him why he wouldn't let me back in and he couldn't even give me a real answer.. i told him to fuck himself and got kicked out!

I've been coming to this joint for years now and am always a good patron to have- i used to be friends with the bouncers (Cale, where are you ? -i miss you!!) because they were cool and nice and not such big heads like the one i had to deal with, a blown up clown with no manners and an attitude that screams of stupidity and lacks any class.

On top of that (with the info for the show) there's something you should know!

(x-posted like crazy, & I apologize – but a lot depends on it!)

Big Top Magazine wants you, needs you, loves you! Chosen “Best Local Web Zine” of 2008 by the SF Bay Guardian (& you – thank you!) after only being launched three months ago, & wants to promote your business, and reward you for letting us do it!
As a huge thank you, until *this* Thursday evening 8/7/08, receive two FREE tickets to its first event, REVOLUTION! (up to a $40 value, not including the immense fun you’ll have at the show) for any advertising space purchased at a value of $150 or more! The magazine is skyrocketing as well as the visits to it, and so this is the absolute best time to get in and let people know about *your* business or services!

Additionally, I plan on doing an issue directly from Burning Man centering on the performers in my camp, The Red Nose District – but I need your help to make it there and achieve this vision – so it’s an incredible win-win thang! You get very visible advertising for what you work so hard for, and what I work so hard for is able to improve for everybody! At the time of this writing, the site has been viewed 2,671 times by 55 countries/territories (including all but 4 states in the U.S. – obviously red ones…) since it’s launch in May, and I’m just getting started! YOUR business can reach out to the world through Big Top!

For more information on advertising benefits & rates, please visit http://bigtopmagazine.com/Advertising/advertise.html and for more information on Big Top Magazine’s first production, visit http://bigtopmagazine.com/revolution.html

Thank you all so much for your continued support, and making Big Top the “Best Of The Bay”!
Hurry now – time is running out for those free tickets – and hey, if you have a friend who you think should advertise with Big Top, forward this to them – hell, forward it everywhere, the New Circus needs you, & so do I!

Tipsy Tuesdays is a fun group partying activity, spread by word-of-mouth, that visits a different bar every Tuesday night. We only go to bars that have outdoor patios, since that's where we like to hang out, so we rotate between 10 or so different places. I've been at it since 2003, and planning this bar crawl for a while, so I thought it would be fun to open it to the public and see how many people we can entice :)

(For reference, I've also posted a map in this tribe)

Official invite:

You've heard the rumours, now be the first on your block to proclaim that they are, in fact, true! Some fool thought it would be cool to do a bar crawl through the most frequently-visited Tuesday locations, and many other fools jumped right in.

Be a fool!

Apologies in advance for the anality of the whole schedule-thing, but you know how paranoid I am that some poor hapless bastard will arrive too early or too late, and miss out, and spend years in therapy recovering from the ordeal.

So, for the sake of that poor hapless hypothetical bastard who may very well be me, I offer you this:

5:00 drink & smoke at Lucky 13, 2140 Market st

6:00 drink & smoke at Pilsner Inn, 225 Church st

6:45 drink & smoke at Zeitgeist, 199 Valencia st. We'll stay a little extra here :)

8:00 drink & smoke at Eagle Tavern, 398 12th st

9:00 consummate at Il Pirata, 2007 16th st

See you on the patio!!

some patient reviews:

just got back from harborside, this place has huge potential. The staff here are excellent. They are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and clearly qualified for their respective positions. Their opening day selection may leave something to be desired but the intensive care grand daddy is top notch and some of the others look pretty decent as well. This is a patient and caregiver collective, they do not force you to designate them as your caregiver in the way many other clubs do. These people are on the up and up, and are clearly trying to provide safe access to medicine for patients while also providing services above and beyond the call of duty. I'd say this place reminds me of BPG, just a lot more classy and a lot less hippy-style(not meant to be derogatory to hippies.

this club is a keeper, folks... the space is clean & bright, with tons of natural light coming in from the windows (yes, you can see in from outside). and the staff is as friendly & professional as they come, too. at this point they've got edibles, extracts, a few clones (jack flash, the odious HMW skunk & a couple others) and a decent though small selection of herbs (a little outdoor, some purples & a few other odds 'n ends). they're striving to have over thirty different varieties to choose from-- a noble goal if there ever was one.

go check this place out & give them the business... they deserve it!

as for harborside - oh my gawd! makes the BPG look like a soup kitchen. We stopped by because we'd heard that they were opening this month and were curious to see the space. We got a little preview (lucked into someone working on the space who gave us a mini tour) and can't wait - this is the club Oakland has been waiting for! Classy, classy, classy. Great BIG space with lots of room in the dispensory and seperate rooms for classes, massage, counseling, etc. If the herb lives up to the space I may just park my car in their big 'ole lot and move into it.

I was able to visit the ultra clean, brand new facility @ Harborsie health center 1840 embarcadero in oakland and I was highly impressed. Upon entrance I was greeted in with a handshake and after being properly checked by security I was instructed into there oreintation room. It was a painless verification process and although I had ocbc my compadre had medicann and his sf card and was able to get verification painless as well. The staff was courteous and they seemed like they were eager to get to helping me.

Med selection:

About 15 different varieties (could be more)

8ths range from $50-60 donation and they have some great concentrates as well. I purchased some Intensive care granddady Purple that was topnotch both in curing and effect. The jarred meds they sell are all sealed and weigh 3.5 grams (checked on my scale at home)

They also had some killer sour deisel best i'd seen in a long time for 55 and some odd 5 purple strains,

For patients on a budget they had purple budlets wich were the same purple nugs they had just smaller for 30$ quite a deal if you ask me..

and for you edible fans they had the standard butter bros products and a couple extras Im sure once they get going they will have a lot more..

Overall Vibe:

Im glad they gave these people the permits to operate this faciltiy because they seem really decdicated to helping patients they have such a huge facility with holistic massage rooms, really nice clean bathrooms and the best part is that the counters. the counters are sort of magnified i guess in wich the buds are very visible and sit on nice glass plates wich are very visible unlike some places where you gotta bend down and get on your knees to look at whats in the bottom of the case.. The place really gives off a more medical vibe than most places and they had a kinda spiritual vibe that i dug in there..

overall Im glad that this place is the feauture of oaksterdamm and I know once the secret gets out this place will be flooded with business..

bottom line:

If your in oakland this is the place..easy freeway acess, good staff and most importantly good meds..

The author in my opinon summed up what Zeitgeist was all about and having been a patron over the last 10 years I have to say I agree. Miss Annie and Sean K - long time friend's and fellow bartender from the Kilowatt and Slim's - are opening a new space at the former CW Saloon and soon to be former Cherry Bar. It's gonna be renamed "Annie's Social Club" and they hope to have the doors open in the early part of January. They hope to bring the spirit back of the old CW Saloon as with the Cherry, but it'll have "Annie's Cocktail Lounge" written all over it.

Yes, karaoke will continue in the back (in the very intimate) peepshow room - on which and how many nights will be up to the hostesses for sure. Live music will also happen along with ROCK DJ nights.

Closing night at Annie's Cocktail Lounge will be on December 31st., but come on down during the rest of December to say good bye. (It'll also be closing night at the Cherry Bar as well).

This is a little long, but worth reading if you intend to get service @ Marin Cycleworks.

My Kawasaki Concours was knocked over by a mini van while legally parked across the street from Zeitgeist in S.F. Fortunately, the main damage was a broken steering lock pin, under the ignition switch. To eliminate the risk of it randomly engaging while riding, I felt it was wise to replace the ignition assembly. I contacted Marin Cycleworks, spoke with "Dave" and scheduled an appointment to drop the bike off and have the work done.

When I arrived on July 13, 2005, the appointed date, Dave had not ordered the part but said he could have it in a couple of days. I also asked him to give me an estimate to replace the rear tire. Dave said he'd call me later that day. My Concours also did something strange while trying to start the engine to drive it up on the trailer. The engine seized. I rocked it in gear and the second time it started fine. I reported this to Dave and he noted it on the work order.

Three days later, I hadn't heard back from Dave so I called for the repair status and the estimate on the rear tire. Dave informed me the part had not arrived nor had the mechanic looked at the bike in regard to the starting problem and he had not researched the cost to replace the rear tire; but he'd call me back later that day with a complete update. No call. On Monday, July 18th I called again. Dave told me the tire would cost $$$ to replace ... it was more than if I went elsewhere, but I figured it was worth the savings in time just to have it done; so I agreed. The ignition switch still had not arrived (I suspect that he hadn't ordered it because a call to another dealer told me that the part was in stock at the Kawasaki distribution center and they could get one in 48 hours). I told Dave I didn't want to rush the mechanical process, but that I'd enjoy having the use of my bike as soon as possible. Dave told me, no problem and promised to stay on top of things and see the repair through. After asking, Dave also said a mechanic looked at the bike and could not get it to repeat the starting problem. On July 29th I still hadn't heard from Dave so I called again. He said the ignition arrived and that the mechanic had it on his calendar to complete early the next week (remember I had an appointment to have this done on 7/13). When I asked about the tire, Dave said the wrong tire was delivered and has been reordered (I later discovered that Dave ordered the wrong tire). I told Dave I'd be away on vacation the first week and a half of August and to please have the bike finished upon my return on August 13th (He said no problem). When I returned, I didn't have any voicemails from Marin Cycleworks, so I called them. Dave told me the tire was installed, the ignition has been replaced but when they went to start it, the engine seized. The mechanic diagnosed a leaky petcock, stuck needle in the carb and fuel was filling the cylinders, preventing the engine from turning over. The mechanic recommended replacing the petcock and rebuilding the carbs ... I decided to go ahead with that. Dave promised the bike would be completed by August 31st. I was going to be out of town that week (but didn't tell them figuring I'd pick it up Monday, September 5th). When I returned, again no voicemails from Cycleworks. I called and Dave said there was a delay in getting parts and the bike would be finished "soon" I asked when and he said they would call. At this point, I expressed my frustration with his lack of consideration and customer service. He apologized and said it was all out of his control. Someone else finally called me on Friday September 9th and said the bike was repaired and ready to go.

I picked it up on Saturday the 10th; a full 60 days after dropping it off. I spoke with Carter, the owner and told him of my ordeal. He seemed genuinely concerned and apologized; stating that he was working on the problems with the front end of his service department. He offered nothing to compensate for my loss of use and I didn't ask. The mechanic spoke with me and took the time to carefully explain what happened in regard to the carbs and how he repaired the problem. I felt confidant that mechanically, the bike was properly cared for, yet from a customer service standpoint they sorely failed.

I don't intend to return to this dealership for service or new equipment sales.

Why drive an RV across California just so you can stay cool in the 109-degree days that are typical in a Nevada Desert this time of year?

Why wait all year to break out of corporate chains to make an “Alternative” temporary city?

Join us for a new tradition…
Drinking Man 2005 at Zeitgeist – Labor Day weekend

- We will ride bikes, walk, and take transit to Drinking Man as to not consume massive quantities of petroleum in our pursuit of nihilistic ‘freedom.’

- We will enjoy The City during a long peaceful weekend when the 9 to 5 artists and corporate club kids are choking on the alkaline dust kicked up by self-indulgent rolling art projects, some years in the making.

- We will salute a psychologically and ecologically sustainable lifestyle and toast the good friends who make every day a creative and wonderful experience in a real city of working people.

- We will commit to donating our spare hours over the next year to volunteering locally to make life in our city more livable for everyone who lives here. We will not just share our creativity and hard work with an elite that can pay $200 to live in a money-free wonderland, just like they do at Club Med.

- We will praise a balanced lifestyles that does not engender so much stress that it needs to be ‘burned’ off in spectacular ways at great expense to the environment.

Raise your glass with us Labor Day Weekend!

Celebrate Drinking Man! (At Zeitgeist – the permanent city of Freedom and Creativity!)

Entrance – Free
Food and drink are available in exchange for American currency

She then received a letter from the bridge toll plaza asking for the missed toll plus an additional fine. Because of the contradicting information, she looked into it. This is what she found.

Motorcycles are being tolled illegaly. Each time we pay a toll, we could be buying a tank of gas.

There is no authority for collection of any toll on vehicles with less than two axles at any California Toll Plaza, to date. This is because any tolls to be collected must be properly posted, and no toll is posted for any vehicle with less than two axles.

Cal. Veh. Code, Div.1 Sec.230 defines vehicle axles. Regardless of what certain parts on your motorcycle might be called in the machine shop, under that legal definition, a motorcycle is a ZERO axle vehicle. In short, this is because the code requires a plural number of "wheels" mounted "in the same transverse vertical plane" for an axle to exist.
If any of you knows anyone who recently had a bike
stolen, they might want to check this place out.

ending. Please spread the word about Karim's. I'm not
worry about libel. Let the ratbastard sue me!!

On November 16 while representing the Bicycle Advisory
Committee at a meeting of the Transportation Authority
my ten-year-old commute bicycle was stolen. It was
locked with a Kryptonite U-lock and I believe the
round keyhole was broken using a Bic pen. The next day
I reported the incident to the San Francisco Police
Department which filed a report, including the serial
number.

Last week the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition formed a
Bike Theft Task Force and now having a personal
interest in the topic, I joined it.

When a report about our meeting landed in my email
today, I was reminded that someone had mentioned
Karim ’s Bike Shop as a place where stolen bikes have
often surfaced. In my spare time, I checked Karim ’s
web site and was startled to see a listing for a bike
fitting the description of mine. I called the shop
asking for “a commute bike like the Bianchi on your
web site ”and was assured that it hadn ’t been sold
yet.

When I arrived an hour later, it ’s not an
overstatement to say that I was shocked and sickened
at what I saw at Karim ’s. The store is so solidly
packed that it ’s impossible to walk into it--bikes
leaned against each other, stuffed into the window,
and hung from the ceiling. I saw a $3,000 titanium
bike next to a $39 Walmart special. I am convinced
that it is the bicycle equivalent of a “chop shop ”,
one which specializes in selling stolen goods.

The minute the owner disentangled the Bianchi from a
pile of others, I immediately recognized it as my own.
He took my driver ’s license while I rode around the
block on a “test ride ”, and flipped it upside down to
doublecheck the serial number. Bingo! A few minutes
later I returned saying that I wanted my husband to
see it, but thought “it was just the bike I ’d been
looking for ”. The owner said I could ride it a bit
longer if I wanted. I took him up on his offer and
rode straight to the nearest fire station where the
police were called.

Three officers responded, took my statement, checked
the bike ’s serial number with a statewide service and
verified that I had reported it stolen. We put the
bike into the trunk of the police car and drove back
to Karim ’s. Officer Jennifer Rowland (Badge 151)
immediately confronted the owner, “You were in
possession of stolen property ”. He told her he ’d
bought it at the Alameda Flea Market from a generic
looking guy (5 ’6 ”, blondish white) he ’d bought bikes
from in the past.

I left the scene at this point because, frankly, my
unlocked bike was sticking out of a car trunk car and
I would be seriously upset if it were stolen a second
time, especially from a police car. Officer Rowland
followed me and wrote a report which I signed. As she
worked, she said that she would make it “her person
project ”to do something about this guy.

“What do you think would happen if you checked the
serial numbers of all the bikes in his shop? ”I
wondered aloud to her.

That ’s exactly what I ’d like to see happen and the
sooner the better. Before that beautiful titanium
bike disappears, for instance.

Reply to: drunk@drunkthemovie.com

Want to get drunk for free and talk to us about your life while being filmed? Do you consider yourself interesting/funny/crazy? Are you unabashed about seeing yourself get more than a little loose on the big screen?

Two local, independent producers are looking for approximately 20 interesting folks in the Bay Area for our humorous documentary chronicling the effects of alcohol on personality.

Here's how it works:

You come to us and sit down in a chair. We provide you with your poison of choice and for up to three hours we record your progress from sober to as drunk as you would like to get. We'll buy you enough of the wine, spirits or beer you need to accomplish this (below the threshold of human toxicity, of course!). Expensive wine drinkers please take note: our spending limit is $50 per person.

The shoot will be indoors, at a home business location in San Francisco. For your own comfort, you may bring a friend to the shoot. During the course of the shoot, we will ask you questions about yourself. These questions range from the mundane and ordinary to the type you might see in a colorful online personality test. You of course have the discretion to answer only the questions you see fit. You may also appear in the movie under a pseudonym. This will be a conversation, geared toward the study of how behavior changes with alcohol. At the end of the shoot, if you do not already have a ride, a member of the crew will drive you home.

We are looking to get this movie into the 2005 festival circuit, or even possibly onto MTV or HBO.

We will be hosting several group "Meet-and-Greets" during the first two weeks of October at a San Francisco pub. At the gatherings, you will meet the producers, Rachel and Sean, fill out a simple form telling us a bit more about yourself, and participate in short interviews. We wish to be certain we are gathering a diverse group of fun and fascinating people, and we want you to see that we are not a bunch of insane pornographers.

The shoots will take place during 6pm and 9pm time slots during the month of November. Appearance dates will be scheduled during October with the individuals chosen from the Meet-and-Greets.

To participate, you must:

- be over 21, with valid photo I.D.

- sign an appearance release form

If this sounds like fun, send us an email and tell us a little bit about yourself and why you want to be in this film. We will email you back with the location and dates of the Meet-and-Greets.

We look forward to hearing from you!!

A coupla months back, some or other glossy moto mag began one of its articles with a quotation from writer/journalist Hunter S. Thompson who was writing about motorcycles for (I believe) the Harley Davidson shareholder's annual report, or somesuch.

I can't remember what magazine it was in exactly, nor what article, and my attempts to locate the text online have all been futile. (My copy of the magazine in question was lost to a house fire a few days after I bought it...)

Anyway, it was an excellent quote, likening the motorcycle to an instrument of liberation, of individual freedom. Of anarchy.

It was pretty inspiring.

Soooo, if this rings a bell in anyone's mind out there, and you can lay hands on said article, I would greatly appreciate it if you could message me with the quotation in question.

Thanks muchly. Ride safe, all.

I was supposed to cover this yesterday, but my cat decided to hide my cycle keys under the bed. However a brother or mine did. Here's the brief he wrote on what happened. If you can, please make a donation to this charity, which will aid wounded returning personel from Iraq, who have over-burdening medical bills because of their injuries]

It started out as a perfect day...the weather was exactly right...we were invited to a big Viet Nam Vets MC event that was designed to raise money for their charities, specifically the "Wounded Warrior Fund," which gives money to the families of soldiers who have been wounded in Iraq...I was going to do an article on the event for Thunder Press...they had 27 vendors lined up, 2 bands, four food servers and the chicks from Spearmint Rhino and a bunch of other stuff...when we arrived, however, there were a lot of bikes parked on the street near the entrance to the facility where the event was to be held...members of the VNV MC were handing out flyers explaining that the run had been cancelled at the last minute by the L.A. County Sheriff, whose "intelligence" had told them that "there would be shootings and knifings from the motorcycle gang members attending"...the VNV MC really got screwed on this one...not only didn't they make any money for their charity but they lost a bundle on this...I was able to sit down with their prez, "Shadow," and one of their officers, "Skywalker," and get a good interview and all the facts about what the Sheriff did...this, of course, will be the article in Thunder Press...along with pictures of all of the cops who roamed the area making sure that we didn't start "shooting and knifing" each other as the cancellation flyers were handed out and a whole bunch of people were turned away...many of us old guys realize that this crap has been going on since the 60s...and it never gets any easier to accept...
=======
This club lost several thousand dollars for this event that was designed to raise money for an honorable cause. If you can, please donate whatever you can to the following:
